This is an exciting opportunity for suitably qualified and experienced individuals to join our Beach Safety team located within Council's Leisure, Beach Safety and Community Facilities Unit.

Our Casual Beach Lifeguards play a key role in supporting the Central Coast community and our many visitors over the summer season by assisting in providing aquatic safety across the 16 patrolled beach locations within the Central Coast Region. The 2024-24 summer season commences 23 September 2023 and closes 24 April 2025.

Successful applicants will be employed on a casual day-to-day basis and will have an opportunity to work up to 38 hours per week, rostered as required over a variable spread of hours, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) at various patrolled locations.

This position is required to provide quality customer service and create value for the community.

Key activities of this role include:

  • Monitor Aquatic Environment for safe swimming at specified location giving full attention to all environmental changes;
  • Respond to emergency situations as required and ensure appropriate reporting of these incidents;
  • Communicate and educate general public on beach safety;
  • Clean and maintain all rescue equipment and facilities required to perform duties to the highest possible standard on a daily basis;
  • Follow directions set by Beach Safety Team Leader, Beach Safety Officer and/or Senior/Seasonal Beach Lifeguards, to ensure delivery of Beach Lifeguard service, and work across multiple locations within the local government area.

Essential Criteria includes:

  • Current Provide First Aid certificate HLTAID 011;
  • Ability to obtain Provide Advanced Resuscitation HLTAID 015;
  • Current NSW General Boating Licence or ability to obtain prior to season commencement;
  • Current Class C Driver’s Licence or Provisional Drivers Licence;
  • Working with Children Check or willingness to obtain prior to season commencement;
  • Demonstrated experience in lifeguarding or other emergency service areas with a demonstrated strong commitment to customer service;
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out safety procedures and use appropriate safety equipment;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and commitment to, Work Health and Safety Principles, Environment Management Principles and Equal Opportunity Principles.

Shortlisted applicants must be available to:

  • Attend the nominated skills testing day and complete the entire test on the day specified, and be available to attend an interview on the allocated interview day if successful in passing all physical skills testing;
  • Bring to Testing Day or Interview any relevant qualifications and licences as requested in the advertised Essential Criteria, both original and photocopies. Licence numbers must be referenced in the application in order to proceed to testing;
  • Provide a Working with Children Check Clearance under the Child Protection (Working with Children) Regulation 2013 (if over 18).

The skills testing day will be held on Wednesday, 28 August 2024. Interviews taking approximately 30 mins will be held on Friday 30 August 2024 (via Microsoft Teams video link). There will be a second testing day held on Wednesday 9 October 2024 with the interview day to be confirmed. 

Shortlisted applicants must pass all of the following skills testing requirements:

  • 800m pool swim in under 14 minutes;
  • Complete beep test to a predetermined level as required;
  • Beach run, swim, run, swim, paddle, run, paddle, run within a given time;
  • Simulated use of rescue equipment in performing surf rescues, including rescue board and rescue tube;
  • Practical and written first aid examination and assessment;
  • Assess a patient and apply spinal care management principles;
  • Competent use of all oxygen equipment.
